2003 Conference Contributors' Short Profiles

Hala Al-Yamani is a teacher at Bethlehem University in Faculty of Education in Early Childhood Programmes. She is working as co-ordinator for the education development centre at Bethlehem University. She works in different projects related to developing the reality of childhood and education sectors in Palestine; she is directing drama works for children and is a board member in the Woman Centre at Bethlehem area. Now she is doing her PhD study in Drama in education and specifically in drama as teaching method in training teachers in Palestine in Exeter University.

Jenny Anninou is a secondary teacher and linguist, who works at present at the Athens Directorate of Secondary Education. She was a student at the Universities of Athens, Salzburg and Lancaster, where she studied Applied Linguistics. Her M.A. dissertation explored the potential of using drama to increase language awareness in school and she is currently working towards a PhD at the University of Athens. She has taught at Doukas School, 4th Gymnsium of Chios, Ralleio Lyceum and Marasleio, where she worked with theatre groups and organized cultural activities and play productions. Her first drama experiences came from her family love for theatre multiplied at Arsakeio School and are still expanding through continuous searching, seminars and workshops. Her meeting with theatre teacher and director Giorgos Biniaris was revealing.

Avra Avdi is a philologist with graduate studies in ancient greek theatre. Since her appointment in secondary education in 1982, she became involved in the educational process (participated in the writing of textbooks on Essay - Expression for the Lyceum and in the compilation of the Curriculum for the teaching of the Greek language) and in Educational Drama/Theatre (school theatre groups and research in the context of her doctorate (PhD) work). She taught in the Department of Education in the Aristotelion University of Thessaloniki and in the 1st Regional Centre for Continuing Professional Development of Teachers in Thessaloniki, in educational programmes related to language teaching and theatre education. She has published work on related topics in educational journals. She is a member of the Panhellenic Association of Educational Drama.

Vasiliki Bakrozi is a primary school teacher and has completed a postgraduate course (M.A.) in the Department of Education of Athens on '' Drama in Education'' She has participated   in Puppet groups since 1985, giving performances in theatres, summer camps, schools, etc. She has also directed many plays in her school and have written the script too by recreating and transforming a literary text. She has a broadcast on radio

Julian Boal comes from Brazil. He has worked as an assistant of his father Augusto Boal, the inventor of “The Theatre of the Oppressed” method. Having served his apprenticeship with Augusto Boal, he went on to teach his own seminars all over the world. He has taught at the International Teachers Association in Geneva, at the 23d International festival of Poetry in Mostar, Bosnia, and has worked with the theatre group Domino in Halle, Germany. His work involves amongst others: working with Mali refugees in France, directing the film Porto Alegre for the World Social Forum in Brazil in 2002 and the documentary on Jana Sanskriti, Calcutta in India. He is the author of the book “Images of Popular Theatre in Brazil” and has translated Augusto Boal’s “The Rainbow of Desire” in French.

Maria Chaniotaki was born in Heraclion Crete. She studied Techn.Civil Engineering (BA), Music, Piano in Greece and Theatre Design – Scenography in Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and in Wimbledon School of Art (WSA), Master in Theatre Design – Scenography (MA) in London U.K She has participated in exhibitions in Greece and England and has worked as a theatre Designer in Theatre and Dance performances since 1990. She has published "Fairies" by Ell. Grammata , "A Kite named shark" by Iolkos, " Flower that wished to become a butterfly" by Iolkos. She is member of The Society of British Theatre Designers" (SBTD), the "International Institute of Theatre" (I IT) and the "The Chamber of Fine Art of Greece (EETE).

Andrea Copeliovitch is an actress, body expression and acting professor. Now she is concluding her Doctoral studies at UFRJ, Literature Department - Poetics, developing the project "The Warlike Actor front to the Abyss", that is a search for understanding the essential in Art, with a glance at the actor, his action and the language that results from that action. Master in Theatrical Practice, she has been developing research on actor's practice since 1991 (as a teacher, as an actress and as a performer); focussing on pre-expressive processes, subject of her Dissertation, "Building a Character through Ritual: an apprenticeship proposal for actors."

Davis David is Professor of Drama in Education at the University of Central England. He was Director of the International Cent’re for Studies in Drama in Education and also Pathway Leader for both the MA Drama in Education and the Certificate and Diploma in Drama in Education courses at this University. Previous to this he was for many years Course Director of the initial qualification PGCE Drama in Education course, which prepared drama specialists for secondary schools. He taught Drama in secondary schools for 15 years. He has presented workshops in many parts of the world and published widely. He now works part-time exclusively with his PhD students in Drama in Education and continues with research

Filia Dendrinou studied Theatre and Pedagogic in Greece and in France. She worked and studied with the “Clownanalysts” in Paris as well as with the theatre company of Dario Fo with whom she mastered on the techniques of the Commedia dell’ arte. She also engaged in pantomime, in the art of the Buffoons of the Middle Ages and in the techniques of circus clowns. As an actress she collaborated with many theatre companies in France and in Greece and in 1985 she participated in the European Festival of Venice and Civentale. Since 1986 she has been engaged in storytelling and has presented many dramatized tales in theatres and conventions. She is specialized in the animation of theatre activities in education and has worked as an animator for the Municipality of Paris. As a pedagogue she has worked as a Kindergarden Headmaster at the I.M. Panagiotopoulos Schools and has given courses on acting, movement and mimics in many drama schools. Since 1996 she has undertaken the elaboration and animation of many programs on theatrical education for the Arsakeia – Tositseia Schools and is now responsible for the program “The initiation of theatre in Compulsory Education”.

Metin Deniz is a renown scenograph (stage designer and art director) in Turkey since 60’s. He has graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul and designed more than 150 sets for Opera, theatre and cinema in Turkey, France, and Switzerland. He also directed plays. He has been teaching art direction in Bilgi University and giving workshops on "space and creativity" in Maya Art Centre where he is the co-founder. He designs art centres in different parts of Turkey. He is recently designing the renovation project of İzmir archaeological museum.

Sead Seyo Djulic was born in 1950. He graduated from the Drama Studio of Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina). Since 1974 he is the artistic director of the Mostar Youth Theatre - MTM (Mostar Teatar Mladih), with which he directed several theatre productions, mainly authorial projects, as well as significant plays of world drama literature including Macbeth by Shakespeare, The Seagull by Chekov, Prometheus by Aischillus, etc.). The main part of his work has been dedicated to the constant and systematic theatrical education of children and young people. To provide this, MTM has been using the most progressive and modern European theatre methods. MTM’s performances are an ongoing theatrical process, showing to the audience the phases that the work of the group followed to reach the stage. Sead Dulic is the president of CDO BiH (Centre of Bosnia-Herzegovina for Drama Education). He also co-ordinates various theatre workshops in his country and abroad. He publishes articles in specialised magazines on his work with young people suffering from war trauma and is the chief editor of Tmacaart, the magazine of CDO BiH. Finally, he has participated in the Summer Schools of Central England University of Birmingham.

Mpetty Giannouli is a Sociologist with studies in Criminology and Economics and teaches in secondary education since 1989. She has been an active voluntary member at the Social Intervention Center covering four municipalities with prevention programs for the local community. She has attended seminars in drama-therapy and participated in festivals, conferences and seminars for theatre in education in Greece and abroad. She facilitates theatrical workshops at school and organizes performances.  Since 1998 she participates in the "Education and Theatre" program of Eastern Attica Directorate, she is a member of the Organizational Committee for the Athens International Conference and member of the Theatre Education Network of Hellenic Teachers.

Cris Ánthony Gonzales is the program director of the youth theater program of the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA).  A senior member of the company, he is taking-up Masteral Degree in Mass Communication, major in Broadcast Communication at the University of the Philippines.  His works in the Philippines involve community organizing and issue advocacy; program development for teachers and students in the formal education; theater arts workshop facilitation; theater festival and conference organizing; networking and repertory theater guidance. He participated in the 4th World Congress of International Drama/Theatre-in-Education-Young IDEA Collaboration in Bergen, Norway 2001. He currently researches the Theater-in-Education curriculum of PETA in the secondary school.

Christos Govaris was born in Volos in 1962. In 1982 he graduated from the Pedagogical Academy of Ioannina. Soon afterwards he was awarded a Master of Political Science and Pedagogics Degree (Magister Artium) in the University of Stuttgart, Germany. In the University of Tuebingen, Department of Educational Science, he successfully completed and approved the award of Doctor of Social Science. Since 1998 he teaches Intercultural Education in the University of the Aegean, Department of Sciences in Preschool Education and of Educational Design

Nikos Govas has worked as actor, musician and director in many theatre companies and music groups in Greece, Melbourne, Munich and London. In 1994 he founded Theatre Lab Company in London, directed performances in several venues, took part in the European Festival of Theatre in Camden London and the International Festival “Theatre Spring” of Experimental Theatre in Salonica and received the Hellenic Foundation Award 1997. He is secondary school teacher since 1982, cultural programs coordinator for Secondary Education of Eastern Attica since 1998 and theatre tutor in many INSET courses, Universities, Municipal Theatres, Associations etc. In 1998 he generated the “education & theatre” project. He co-ordinates the Athens International Conference and he is chair of the Theatre Education Network of Hellenic Teachers.

Smaro C. Gregoriadou, a Greek guitar soloist, composer and music pedagogue, studied music and architecture in Greece and England. She was awarded a Senior Exhibitioner Scholarship at Royal College of Music, London, and graduated with honors. She is the recipient of numerous music awards, both in composition and interpretation (Athens, Bilbao, Rome, Bologna, Troy). She has performed all over Europe as guest soloist in music festivals, member of chamber music groups, or with orchestras. She has extensively lectured, given seminars and published articles concerning guitar history and technique, music aesthetics and the experience of music in theatre and education. Her recent research is concentrating on metrical and musical design in ancient Theater, musicality of Greek speech and essence of music interpretation. She has extensively composed music in all forms, which has been broadcasted and presented in Greece, England, Turkey, Italy and Spain. Since 1999 she is lecturer in the International Seminars “Music and Theatre Skills in school environment” in collaboration with Education and Artistic Authorities of Greece. She is member of Theatre Education Network Ellenic Teachers and “Mythologia” artistic and Theatre Company.

Melina Hadjigeorgiou is a teacher with graduate studies in Drama in Education. She has participated in various seminars related to theatre, drama, theatre-in-education and puppetry. From 1993 on, she has been teaching drama in state and public primary schools and the Regional Theatre of Ioannina. She has also been involved with teacher training in the field of drama. She is a member of the Panhellenic Association of Educational Drama.

Armin Joha Hadzimusic was born in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in 1967. Since 1981 he is member of Mostar Youth Theatre (Mostar Teatar Mladih, MTM), taking part in all the drama studios co-ordinated by this theatre. Since 1990 he works as an actor in MTM. Today, he is an actor and a drama pedagogue. Since 1997 he is the secretary of CDO BiH (Centre for Drama Education of Bosnia-Herzegovina). He is also member of the editorial board of Tmacaart, CDO BiH’s magazine for drama, theatre and education. He has participated in the co-ordination of many workshops in Singapore, USA, Jordan and Europe.

Andjelija (Andja) Jocic (1963), Belgrade, CEDEUM Center for Drama in Arts and Education project coordinator, in charge of Drama Primary, training program for educators, aiming at introducing drama into education system and preschool institutions, elementary and secondary schools curriculum, officially accredited by Serbian Ministry of Education and Sports. Coordinator of intercultural oriented language learning programs in Studio for creative education ”Školigrica“, with children age 4 – 7, within the Center of Culture “Stari Grad”. Leader of Children Drama Studio “Škozorište”, ages 7 – 15, project oriented and working on interactive methods and creative processes. Interpreter/translator for English and Polish.

Phil Jones is principle lecturer in the Arts Therapies Programme and course leader of postgraduate studies in Dramatherapy at the University of Hertfordshire. He has also held the posts of course leader in Foundation Studies and Advanced Training in Art Therapy. He has lectured and written widely on the Arts Therapies in a variety of countries including the USA, Canada, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Ireland and Greece. He is the author of ‘Drama as Therapy: Theatre as Living’ (Routledge) and the forthcoming ‘The Arts Therapies Revolution’ (Routledge). His clinical work has included practice in the field of mental health, autism and people with learning disabilities.

Vassiliki Karkou is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Department of Art and Arts Therapies and a trained dance movement therapist (Roehampton, UK). Her background is in education (Thessaloniki, Greece) with postgraduate studies in arts education and arts therapies (Manchester UK). She is the author of the forthcoming book: An Introduction to Arts Therapies in the UK (Elsevier) which is based on her Ph.D. work. She has written extensively in national and international journals (mainly in arts therapies in education). She is a member of the Arts Therapies Research Committee and the Health Professions Council working group on establishing standards of proficiency for the field of Arts Therapies. Her current clinical work is in mental health and learning disabilities. Dr Karkou is the project manager of the Labyrinth project.

Nellie Karra was born in Florida , U.S.A. She studied theater at Trinity University and the Dallas Theater Center from which she received a Bachelor and a Master of Arts. She worked professionally as an actress, choreographed and acting instructor first in Texas and later in New York. After moving to Greece she did choral movement for productions of Ancient Greek Drama and modern Drama for the Greek National Theater and other stages, she continued to teach acting and movement. She founded the "Organismos Theatrikis Kinisis" and opened one of Greece's first professional theater workshops. She also began the first theater training program for deaf actors and the first, so far the only, Deaf Theater in Greece. She continues to direct for the theater and acts occasionally. With the co-operation of Secretariat of Youth she organizes and directs the program "Theater in Schools" and as a result they function 29 workshops in high schools and in lyceum in all over Attiki. She teaches the pilot program "Educational Creative Procedure", in the mental clinic on Leros Island to patients, scientific and medical personnel. At present she is Director of studies and instructor at the Drama School "ARHI" which she founded nine years ago.

Andreas Ioannou Kassetas, born in Athens, studied Physics in Athens and in Paris. He teaches Physics in Ionios school and Science Education in PEK. He has taken part in more than ten conferences on educational issues. His first book (1989, ed. Katoptro) was “Leonardo’ s Ghost”, the second (1992, ed. Katoptro) “Bear, Lake Prespa, Friday” and his third book (1996, ed. Savallas) was ”Teaching Physics”., His recent book “And the proposal is: let’s go for a walk” was published, by editions Pataki in 2000. He has co-authored the books of Physics for the first and the second year of Lyceum (1997-2000). In 1995 he founded the theatrical company “Kechribari (Amber)” with which he staged his -three act- play, related Physics, at Ionios School theater, at PEK and at Ilissia Theater. In 1996 he wrote the play “ouranographies” that he presented with pupils. He is a keen cinemagoer, but he possesses mediocre skills in jazz, despite of his son’ s valiant efforts to initiate him in this kind of music.

Alkistis Kondoyanni is a senior lecturer of drama at the Department of Early Childhood Education, University of Thessaly. She has graduated the Philosophy Department of Athens University, Academy of kindergarten Teachers, St. Nicholas Training College, Marasleios’ Further Studies in Special Education, University of Florence and College of Writing. Her doctorate is on Drama and the promotion of social competence of students with special needs at the Psychology Department of Athens University. She has taught at the University of Thessaly, Department of Special Education and Department of Museum Education, and at the Kapodistrian University of Athens, Department of Early Childhood Education and Department of Theatre Studies. She is the author of 39 books for children and educators. She participates at research groups in many countries (European network of Affective Education, Dynamic Pedagogy) and has given lectures and workshops worldwide (England, Italy, Japan).

Stelios Krasanakis studied Medicine at the Aristotelian University of Salonika and specialized in Psychiatry. Meanwhile, he studied theatre at the Review of Dramatic Art with Roula Pateraki and Dramatherapy at the Institute of Dramatherapy with Emmy Sue Jennings. At this moment he is working as a psychiatrist – psychotherapist through drama therapy and as director. He is responsible for the programme of drug-addiction “THISEAS” of municipality of Kallithea. He is the creator of the Dramatherapy center “AEON”, which offers education and therapy. He collaborates with Universities – Institutes and government and non-government associations by teaching Drama therapy in Greece and abroad as well. He is responsible for the book series “Roles in life and roles in the theatre” published by “Ellinika Grammata”. He has directed 11 theatrical performances and he is the Artistic Director of Naxos Festival. He is member of the Greek Council of Psychotherapy, World Council of Psychotherapy, I.T.A.C.A., of the Greek Director’s Association, of the Greek Council of Clinical

Radka Mackova graduated at Janacek Academy of Music and Arts /JAMU/, Brno, Czech Republic in the department of Drama in education. She based her final graduation work on the application of The Forum Theatre techniques within the Czech social and cultural background. She is leader of Theatre group for children and youth called PIRKO. As a member and leader of this group she took part in several intercultural exchanges and projects in European countries. Currently she works in Drama department at JAMU as a lecturer and is also teaching English language using drama methods

Stathis Markopoulos has been an apprentice in the Spanish marionette company Marionetas Del Matadero and studied at the State Academy of Puppet Theatre in Prague. Since 1992, he travels around Greece and abroad performing with puppets in the streets, theatres, festivals etc. He has collaborated with many theatre companies and has organized puppetry workshops for adults and children. Since 1996, he has been the Secretary (and now President) of the Greek Center of the International Union of Puppet Theatre (UNIMA).

Marcos Martínez is Professor of Theatre in the Visual and Performing Arts Department at California State University, San Marcos. He is a director and actor whose writings include “Community and the Sacred in Chicano Theater” in El Cuerpo de Cristo: The Hispanic Presence in the U.S. Catholic Church edited by Peter Casarella and Raul Gomez (New York: Crossroad Publishing, 1998); “Africans, Vikings and Chicanos: Observations on Decolonizing Effects of the Suzuki Method of Actor Training” (1983); a bilingual comedy, Poaching (1994); and two monologues developed and co-authored with Cheyney Ryan, Holy Dirt (1997), and Green Chile Vikings (2002). Martínez is a master teacher of the Suzuki Actor Training Method, which he studied with Tadashi Suzuki in Toga Mura, Japan. Directing projects in conjunction with teaching Suzuki Method include: Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, TX; Taos, NM; Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México; Faeroe Islands, Denmark; Ghana; Israel; and Bosnia-Hercegovinia. Acting projects include Bandido with Luis Valdez and touring Holy Dirt in the U.S., Holland, and Denmark. A co-founder and former Artistic Director of La Compañía de Teatro de Alburquerque (1988-91) Martínez is a graduate of the University of New Mexico and the Juilliard School’s Professional Actor Training Program (Group 12).

Alex Mavrocordatos is Senior Lecturer at the School of Community and Performing Arts at King Alfred's University College, Winchester.  He specialises in Community Drama and works with theatre in both the formal and the non-formal education sectors, exploring the use of drama to support marginalised communities in the expression and articulation of their own concerns.  He has worked with street children, school teachers, development workers, farmers - oh yes - and actors as well. In addition to his work on the MA degree in Theatre for Development, his international training and consultancy work has included extensive  programmes in Africa, Asia, the Pacific and of course in Britain.

Christina Mouratidou is born in Thessaloniki (Greece), in 1974. She graduated from the Drama Department of Aristotle University (Thessaloniki) in 1998 (acting, theatre studies). In 2002 she received the M.A. in Applied Drama from the Drama Department of Exeter University (U.K.) (main module: Drama as Social Intervention). Since 2000 she co-ordinates workshops on Theatre-in-Education (TIE), in co-operation with the “education & theatre” project, the “Theatre Education Network of Hellenic Teachers” or as a free lance professional. At the same time, she begins co-operation with the Medical Psychoanalytic Centre of Thessalonki where she trains in psychotherapeutic forms, co-operates with therapists on therapeutic role play and teaches practical seminars on this subject. She also co-operates with the Social Organisation of Youth Support Arsis as a drama worker in the community and teaches theatre education in the primary school of Anatoliko (Thessaloniki). She has worked as an actress in the State Theatre of Northern Greece (Phoenician Women, 1999); since then, she periodically works in non-state theatres.

Giorgos Mpiniaris is actor, director and theatre pedagogue and tutor with longtime experience in teachers’ education. He has collaborated with numerous theatre companies in Athens and has toured in London and Brussels. He has instructed and directed many plays in Universities of Athens and Crete, in municipal theatre companies all over Greece, and in “Empros” Theatre School of Drama. He is artistic director of “Mythologia” Theatre Company and a member of Theatre Education Network Hellenic Teachers.

Antigone Morou holds a degree in Greek Literature and a PhD of Theater’ s Studies (Paris III, Sorbonne). She has attended dramatic art classes and teaches in schools using dramatic methods. Detached for three years to Ministry of National Education, she was member of the Organizing and Critical Committee of “Panhellenic School’s Agones of Theater”. As member of Thematic Commission of Pedagogical Institute has been involved in syntaxis of the Esthetics Curriculum (Theater – Music – Painting). In the last two years she is engaged in teacher training.

Jonothan Neelands is Senior Lecturer in Drama and Theatre Education in the Institute of Education, University of Warwick, where he teaches the PGCE English and Drama and the MA in Drama and Theatre Education. He has worked as an Advisor and advisory teacher for Drama and is an experienced trainer and workshop leader with a national and international reputation for delivering high quality professional training and development opportunities. He is the author of several texts for teachers and students, which have influenced the development of drama in recent years including Structuring Drama Work, Beginning Drama 11-14 and Drama and Theatre Studies at A/S and A level.

David Pammenter is currently Principal Lecturer and Director of Pedagogy at King Alfred’s University College, School of Community and Performing Arts. He is also visiting lecturer, director, consultant and external examiner in a number of Colleges, Companies and institutions in the UK and abroad. He is founding member of the Belgrade TIE Team Coventry, the first Theatre-In-Education team which became a model for national and international development of TIE practice and contributed greatly to the development of DIE (Drama in Education). He has worked extensively in Africa and Asia and his research interests are in the area of TfD -Theatre For Development.

Apostolia Papadamaki, was born in Thessaloniki, Greece. Her degree in Physical Education stimulated her to further explore dance movement. After graduating from the Greek National School of Dance, she went on to study new dance techniques in New York (1993-95, the Merce Cunningham Studio scholarship. She was the artistic director, choreographer and dancer of sinequanon dance co. (1992-2002) and has choreographed 8 full-evening pieces winning an honorary distinction at the International Choreographic Competition of Seine - Saint- Denis '96 (Bagnolet). Apostolia was awarded the Hellenic Tourism Organisation choreography award ' (1992) and was commissioned for works at the National Opera House, National Theatre of Greece, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York (1998), the Zodiak - Center for New Dance in Helsinki 2000 and the National Theater of Nothern Greece, 2001.She was Choreographer in Residence at the Full Moon Festival, Finland for 2000, and at the National Theatre of Northern Greece for 2001. In October 2002 she founded her new company “quasi stellar”. She has organised two dance festivals, Travelogue'98 and Taxidromio '99 and has recently collaborated with director-visual artist Jan Fabre commissioned by the Avignon Festival. Apostolia is a member of IETM (Informal European Theatre Meeting) and on the board of directors of the Greek Choreographers Union.

Kostas Patsatzopoulos is a music-pedagogue. He has studied European Music (diploma of synthesis) and has advanced University studies at the Musical Pedagogical Academy of Art’s Music and Danse of Plovtiv in Bulgaria. He has taught in Secondary Education. He has also taught in Department for Pre-school Education of Ioannina University, and in many teacher-training Institutes (Maraslio etc). He is director of a polyphonic choral giving concerts in Greece and abroad.

Gianna Pitouli, after finishing her studies as a primary school teacher, she started working in the field of education and theatre. She took her MA degree in Applied Drama (University of Exeter, School of Drama, UK) in 2000. On her return back to Greece she works on TIE in Greek schools. The first TIE programme (‘Diafiges’) took place in secondary schools in Athens (2001). At the present time, she is working as a primary school teacher; at the same time she runs workshops in the field of drama and theatre in education.

Charis Polycarpou holds a BA in Pedagogic from the University of Cyprus, MA in Drama- in- Education and Cultural studies and more recently a PhD in Theatre studies from the University of Warwick. Her doctorate thesis focuses on the subject of the ancient Athenian drama, it studies its connection to the more contemporary forms of democratic theatre developed in Modern Drama in the twentieth century and sees to investigate the potential new role of the ancient drama in the contemporary Hellenic world. Her research interests include the political theatre of Brecht and Boal, the close connection of theatre to culture and education, the reinterpretation of the ancient Greek myths through the means of theatre, the contemporary trends in the field of Drama- in- Education which seek to close the gab that traditionally exists between it and the field of Theatre. She gave lectures on drama and organized theatre workshops in the Pedagogical Institute of Cyprus for primary and secondary school teachers. At present, she teaches drama in schools in Cyprus.

Popie Polymerou studied Linguistics in the University of Thessaloniki, Theatre in the Dramatic Faculty of State Theatre of Northern Greece and English Literature in the University of Athens. She is a doctorand in the Department of Communication, Means and Culture of Panteion University of Athens, where she works as a scientific collaborator in the Cultural Laboratory of the Department. For many years she was the person in charge of the National Artistic Competition for Students in the area of Eastern Sterea Hellas and member of the critical committee for the Theatre Competition. She has taught History of Theatre, Drama in Education and “Èåáôñéêü Áíáëüãéï /Theatricï Analogio/”in the Dramatic Laboratory of the Municipal Regional Theatre of Roumeli. She has made a lot of announcements in seminars for teachers upon subjects of culture, cross-cultural education, theatre and literature. She has directed and presented “theatrica analogia”. She is a member of the Hellenic Center of the International Institute of Theatre (UNESCO).

Yannis Poutachidis, drama teacher, Master of Arts in Drama / Theatre in Education. He teaches Drama in daylong elementary schools in Thessalonica and organizes and teaches in teachers’ training seminars applying Theatre in Education. Since 2001, he co-operates with JANACEK Academy of Music and Arts, Brno in Czech Republic as students’ pre-graduate and post-graduate projects grader / evaluator. He is vice president in Theatrical Artistic Cultural Center of Thessalonica, responsible for the Drama in Education Center and founder member of Panhellenic Association of Drama in Education.

Korina Preveduraki is a painter. After her studies at Graphic Arts - Athens, at “Vakalo School of Art and Desigh”, she graduated from “Academy of Fine Art of Brera” - Milan. She has participated in several Group Exhibitions. Also she has directed an Art Creator Studio for adolescents since 1992 till ’ 98. For fifteen years she works as a teacher of Art, firstly at Private Schools and secondly at Public High Schools. Since 2000 she specialized at organizing of Educational programs about approach between School and Museum, at Directorate of Secondary Education of Eastern Attica. She is member of the Unit of Fine Arts’ Teachers and the Chamber of Hellenic Fine Arts.

Persephone Sextou is a current Ph.D. candidate at the University of London, UK, with a research interest in the potential of establishing Theatre in Education in Greece alongside the further development of drama practice in schools. She teaches aspects of drama and theatre in education at the Departments of Special Education (University of Thessalia) and English (Aristotle Unversity of Thessaloniki) and lectures in drama teacher in-service training courses. She is the author of 'Dramatisation; the teacher-animator's book' (Athens, Kastaniotis, 1998) and of various publications in Greek and English journals (Contemporary Education, Research in Drama Education, New Theatre Quarterly, Journal of Education for Teaching).

Phil Sixsmith lived for many years in the U.K. where his career included working alongside and advising practicing teachers, managing a local authority drama centre/small scale theatre and chairing committees for a regional arts association. Since moving to Thessaloniki he has presented seminars in drama methodology to teachers through the country, and is a regular contributor to the Theatre Studies, Pre-school and Primary Departments of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

John Somers is senior lecturer at the Drama Department of Exeter University, He specializes in Drama and Theatre-in-Education and recently completed TIE programmes on bulling, alcohol education, racism, and young people’s self awareness. His teaching and research took him in many countries including Poland, Greece, Taiwan, Brazil. He is director of the MA in Applied Drama course, editor of the journal Research in Drama Education and director of an international research conference.

Jeffrey Tan is a Singaporean theatre director, educator and lighting designer who graduated from Queensland University Of Technology, Brisbane in 1995. Since returning to Singapore, Jeffrey has worked as Resident Director with the late Cultural Medallion Winner, Mr Kuo Pao Kun at The Theatre Practice, and Lecturer at LASALLE-SIA, School of Drama and directed independently for Theatreworks, The Necessary Stage and Toy Factory Ensemble. Jeffrey also lectures part time for the in-service teachers courses for National Institute of Education and ‘Arts Management’ at both Temasek Polytechnic and LASALLE-SIA, Arts Management Department. Currently Jeffrey is the Associate Artistic Director with Theatreworks (S) Ltd, Education and Outreach Unit. He also sits on the National Arts Council, Singapore Arts Festival’s Programming Committee 2001/2002, 2003/2004, the NAC Georgette Chen Scholarship Panel 2002 and the Y.M.C.A. Sports and Recreation Board. Jeffrey is also the pro-tem president of the Singapore Drama Educators Association.

Kenneth Taylor is Principal Lecturer in Drama at Middlesex University where he is the Course Leader for the Secondary PGCE in Drama. He is also the supervisor for MPhil and PhD students researching into Drama in Education. Ken is a regular contributor to INSET courses and national and international conferences. Before Middlesex he taught in both Primary and Secondary schools. He edited the book Drama Strategies (1991), contributed a chapter entitled, 'Drama in the National Curriculum at Key Stages 3 and 4', in the book Interpreting the New National Curriculum (1996) and has written many articles notably for the Drama Magazine. He has just published two books for Pearson Using the Internet: Drama (1999) and ICT in Drama: Policy and Practice (2000). He also wrote ICT Training for Teachers: English (1999) with Trevor Millum and Peter Thomas for The University of Hull. He worked with Jos Leeder to produce the Edexcel GCSE Drama book that was published by Hodder & Stoughton in 2001. Edward Terana has been with the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA)since 1997. A junior member of the company, he has a bachelor degree in Communication Arts and recently worked as an altelierista at the Wunderkind Educational Foundation-Philippines.  He is also involved in developmental education, theater arts facilitation, theater festival and conference organizing, and repertory theater guidance. He recently directed-choreographed PETA’s children play Mga Kwentong Asyano (Asian Folktales). He also participated in the 4th World Congress of International Drama/Theatre-in-Education-Young IDEA Collaboration in Bergen, Norway 2001.

Elissavet Tsaliki has worked extensively in the field of environmental education including project development, teacher training and research. She is currently head of the Environmental Education Centre of Eleftherio – Kordelio Thessaloniki.

Helen Tsefalas was born in Montreal, Canada where she completed her elementary and secondary education. She is an English language and literature teacher who has post-graduate studies at the University of Athens and the University of London, Institute of Education on “Comparative Education and Human Rights”. She has also attended the University of Edinburgh in a Lingua Programme “Drama and Education” (1994). She has translated into Greek the poetic collection ‘Sounds’ of Wassily Kandinsky, edited by EYMOUSIA. She has attended acting courses at the Central School of Speech and Drama (2000). At present she is studying theatre in the Drama School of Volos. She is teaching E.S.P (English for specific purposes) at the University of Thessaly.

Ioanna Vetsopoulos, after graduating from the Athens University School of Philosophy, continued her studies at the Department of Art History and Theory of the University of Essex U.K., specializing in early 20th century art and the beginning of Modernism (M.A). From January 1988 she is working as a freelance teacher of art History. She has organised and taught numerous seminars on the History of 20th century Art, the History of Neo-Hellenic Art, Renaissance Art, Romanticism and the History of 19th century European Painting for the Cultural Center of the Municipality of Halkis, the Adult Education Department of Athens College, and the Athens branch of Christie’s Educational Programmes. She is also teaching courses on Visual Culture and Art History at the Moraitis School Lykeion and translating Art books for Kastaniotis Publishing Company.

Thanos Vovolis is mask, costume and stage designer. He studied Social Anthropology, Film and Theater Studies at the University of Stockholm (1977-1982) and Costume/Mask Design at the Dramatiska Institutet (1982-1985). In 1995 he presented his research on the tragic mask, emphasizing the relation between the voice and the mask and the acoustics of the mask (Dramatiska Institutet 1990-1995 ). He has been working with more than fifty theater productions in Sweden, Greece and Spain and has led courses upon the design and use of mask on stage in Sweden, Greece, Norway, Spain, England. Exhibitions with his theater masks have been shown in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Athens, Delphi, London, Berlin, Madrid, Merida, Seville

Spyros Vrachoritis is director. He has studied law, theater and cinema. He completed his studies in Nancy (“Centre Universitaire International de Formation et des Recherches Dramatiques” under the direction of Jaques Lang) and in Paris (Departement of documentary cinema under Jean Rouch). Since 1976 is the leader – director of “Theatrical Leschi” Volos with insistence in the dramatisation of neo-hellenic litterature and in directions of classical and modern plays. In 1984 he directed the TV series “Language and Life”, on the history of Greek language. His direction of Sophocles’ “Antigone” in the original ancient Greek text has been awarded with UNESCO’s Prize as an outstanding contribution in the field of the performing arts in EXPO’ 92 in Seville. He has lectured in many Conferences on Ancient Drama and Modern Theater.

Zeljko Vukmirica graduated from the Zagreb Academy of Film and Dramatic Art in 1976. He is member of the ITD Theatre and cofounder of the Theatre Workshop "POZDRAVI" (Greetings, E. Ionesco) after the homonymous performance, which was an international smashing hit during the 70's. He was professor of acting to the first generation of the Actor's Studio of HNK (Croatian National Theatre) Split in 1979. His independent career started with his first authorial play History of My Stupidity that was performed for about 1000 times in the interval between 1979 and today. He goes to Paris for two years in order to improve his acting technique and is trained by Mario Gonzalles, professor at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Paris. On his return, searching for the "new opera", he founded the Theatre Laboratorium Simul, wich was crowned with performance Gluhlampe. He took part in lot of films, TV and theatre productions. He produced feature film Nausica, Croatian representative for the Academy Award in 1996. He is President of the board of the International Youth Theatre Festival MKFM in Pula (Istria) and works professionally as member of the Croatian Freelance Artists Association in Zagreb.

John Wright is co-fonder of Told by an Idiot where he has directed most of their repertoire including: ‘I Can’t wake up’, ‘On the verge of exploding’, (nominated for the independent award) and  ‘Don’t laugh it’s my life’, ‘I’m so big’, and ‘Happy Birthday Mr Deka D’. He is also co founder of Trestle Theatre company, where he co directed most of their repertoire until 1992 included ‘Top storey’, ‘Ties that bind’ and ‘The edge’ (winner of Time Out Theatre Award). Other work includes: ‘Soul in a Suitcase’ Edinburgh Festival) ‘Meeting myself coming back’ (Soho Theatre) ‘She’ll be coming round the mountain’, (Awards from the Sunday Times and The Guardian) King Ubu, (The Gate), ‘Don Juan’ (Commotion Theatre Co) ‘The man who woke up in the dark’ and ‘The Wife of Bath,  both for Trading Faces ‘A Little Job for an Old Clown’, (R.N.T Studio), Hamlet and ‘The Changeling’ for Third Party Productions Ltd. His International work includes: ‘Macbeth’, (Act Three Theatre Co. Singapore). ‘Shooting Sons’, (The Hong Kong theatre ensemble) and development projects in Indonesia, Germany, Israel and Spain. He has directed two operas – ‘Master Peters Puppet Show’ and ‘Aesop’, (Scotsman Fringe First), both co-productions (Royal Opera House and National Youth Music Theatre). He is currently working with Theatre Ensemble (Paris) and on a new opera for Opera Circus. John is an international teacher of theatre and his workshops are in great demand. He has received the Greater London Arts Award for his contribution to Physical Theatre

George Zamboulakis was born in 1966. He studied drama and stage direction at Hadzikos Drama School and continued his studies at Dramatiska Institute in Sweden. He organised seminars for actors in Greece and other European countries (UK, Germany, Sweden, Spain) on the thematic fields “body” and “voice”. In Greece he directed various theatre performances with DH.PE.THE Kalamatas, in Athina Theatre and in the National Theatre. He has translated theatre plays to Greek. He has written and presented poems
